Celebrating Creativity

By Luciano Ponticello, Master Designer – Dhamani 1969

Creativity is a noun that describes a human being’s ability to invent and to create; it does not refer to an object.
An object cannot be creative on its own. What is creative is the process that leads to the conception, design, and construction of an object—of a piece of jewellery.

Jewellery expresses creativity only when it is the outcome of a creative process.
This process takes place when specific areas of the brain activate, communicate, and generate ideas.

Jewellery can be among the finest results of a creative process. But are all jewellery creative? No. A replica may possess exceptional technical and aesthetic quality. Yet, it does not carry creative content—at least not beyond the creativity originally expressed by the creator of the first piece.

jewellery embodies creativity when it shapes and transforms matter, giving it aesthetic value and technical and functional qualities that elevate its intrinsic nature.

A gemstone itself is not creative; it is a gift of nature, formed in the earth over millennia.
The creative process enhances this natural “fruit”—the gem—by giving it a setting, a form, a jewelryry.

The ability to draw is not creativity in itself. Rather, drawing is a skill that allows a designer to express creativity. A truly creative designer answers the question “Why?” through lines and forms.
The resulting design becomes the answer—rich in aesthetic and functional intent, filled with technical details that gain aesthetic importance and craft a story of their own. A genuine story, because it is born of a creative process filled with emotion, sensitivity, and humanity.

This is our philosophy. At Dhamani 1969, the creative process is shared at every level. Designers act as interpreters, giving visual form to the “whys” that arise during the development of a collection or an individual jewelryry.
From these answers to “why” emerges the “what”: the jewellery itself.

Today, technological innovation allows us to express our creative potential with greater clarity, efficiency, and speed. The integration of AI has added new “words” to our expressive vocabulary. Investments in advanced manufacturing technologies have significantly elevated the quality of Dhamani 1969 creations.

But the question remains: “In the future, can technological innovation replace the creative process and the intelligence of our artisans’ hands?” I do not believe so.

The creative process is inherently human—shaped by sensitivity, emotion, and the quiet journey of curiosity, refinement, and creative exploration. These are essential ingredients for imagining, designing, and crafting jewellery that embody stories and evoke emotion.
