Bridal Dress and Jewelry Through Time: Our Perspective
By Luciano Ponticello, Master Designer – Dhamani 1969
The relationship between wedding dress and jewelry spans millennia—arguably as ancient as marriage itself. From Ancient Rome and Greece, where white symbolised purity and the gold ring marked a promise of union, the foundations of bridal symbolism were set early.Over time, this relationship evolved with cultural and social change. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, particularly in Europe, wedding dresses became richly adorned with brocades, velvets, and gemstones, often sewn directly into the fabric. Jewelry, often heirloom pieces, reflected the wealth and status of the bride’s family.
By the 16th to late 19th centuries, this expression of status reached its peak. Bridal attire was opulent and voluminous, embroidered with precious materials and paired with bold jewelry, tiaras, and crowns—each element enhancing presence and prestige.
The 20th century marked a shift. The dress returned to white—symbolising purity—while becoming more refined and understated. Jewelry followed with platinum, pearls, diamonds, and occasional sapphires, introducing a quieter elegance.
A new harmony emerged, placing the bride at the centre. The dress enhanced her femininity, while jewelry became more considered—framing the face and neckline, creating a refined, almost cinematic effect.
From the 1950s to today, this dialogue has continued to evolve. Dresses remain rooted in white with softer tones and lighter fabrics, while jewelry now includes white, rose, and yellow gold. The bride is the true protagonist. The dress and jewelry serve to enhance her personality, femininity, and presence—they must never overshadow her.
Also for us, at Dhamani 1969, the bride is the protagonist: we design jewelry listening carefully to her needs and reflecting in each creation the personality of the bride who trust our hands. For us, understanding the bride is essential—her story, her character, her dreams, and everything she chooses to share with our team.
The next step is to place pencil to paper, shaping each design together with the bride, sharing with her every aesthetic choice before entrusting the final creation to our skillful master artisans.
Ours is a constant commitment, aimed at enriching our collections including creations dedicated to the bride.
The primary source of inspiration in our creative process is always Nature.
“Essence,” our concept inspired by Water and Air, takes shape in pieces that are rich yet never opulent—discreet, yet defined by character and aesthetic presence. In these pieces, technical details, the careful selection of diamonds and attention to the finest elements become a graphic signature, an expression of contemporary style. Air becomes platinum, water becomes diamond, nourishing the bride into a new chapter of her life.
“Tempus,” our concept inspired by the Sound and Thought, is perhaps the one with the strongest bridal vocation. Here our jewels come alive through the lively and sparkling interplay of different “actors on the scene”: diamonds of varying cuts, shapes, and sizes, dance together, composing creative rhythms. Like musical notes, they are set upon the musical staff made of platinum, white gold, as well as rose and yellow gold. “Tempus” jewels express freshness and vibrancy, while never overshadowing the true protagonist of the play—the bride.
Our story ends here. The final chapter could be told by the gracious brides who, to this day, have chosen to place their trust in Dhamani 1969.
